Mafe was inside Parliament for more than a day – report

Parliament arson accused Zandile Mafe is said to have spent at least 30 hours inside the parliament building, making phone calls and starting the catastrophic fire by burning boxes, a report has revealed.

His activities and movements inside National Key Point were captured on cameras as on-duty police officers slept, while others wore headphones.

Mafe, 49, who also faces a terrorism charge, is expected to seek bail on Saturday.

He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was sent to Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital after his second appearance at Cape Town Magistrates Court. Last week, the Western Cape High Court overturned the lower court’s decision to commit Mafe to 30-day mental observation and ordered that he be released from hospital.
