ED arrested Ambience mall owner Raj Singh Gehlot in an alleged bank loan fraud case.

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) on Thursday arrested Raj Singh Gehlot, owner of the famous Ambience shopping center in Gurugram, in an alleged case of bank loan fraud amounting to Rs 200 crore.

Raj Singh Gehlot was arrested in Gurugram and will be brought before a PMLA court in Delhi today for a pre-trial detention hearing.

Previously, the ED had raided seven sites in Delhi linked to Raj Singh Gehlot. These include the offices of Aman Hospitality Pvt Ltd (AHPL) and the Ambience Group, which operates Ambience shopping malls in the NCR and the luxury hotel The Leela Ambience Convention Center, among other real estate properties.

By carrying out searches in these seven premises, the central investigative agency recovered Rs 16 lakh in cash and Rs 25 lakh in foreign currency.

Over the past few months, the ED had interrogated Raj Singh Gehlot on several occasions. Interrogation of the owner of the shopping center revealed that the land on which the Ambience shopping center is built in Gurugram was intended for a housing project. Gehlot is said to have committed the fraud with the help of politically connected people and government officials.

The ED case is based on an FIR registered by the Jammu Anti-Corruption Bureau against AHPL and its directors in connection with alleged loan fraud in the construction and development of the 5-star “Leela Ambience Convention Hotel” in East Delhi. The case was registered following a complaint from J&K Bank, which was part of the consortium of banks that had granted the loan.

The ED alleges that the loan amount was embezzled and the money was transferred through shell companies started by Raj Singh Gehlot.
