Former YSRCP MP Kothapalli Geetha arrested by CBI in bank loan fraud case

The arrest follows a CBI court conviction of Geetha, her husband and two others for allegedly deceiving a bank to obtain a loan of Rs 25 crore in 2009.

Former Lok Sabha member Kothapalli Geetha was arrested on Wednesday September 14 by the CBI in Hyderabad in connection with a bank loan fraud case. The arrest follows a CBI court’s conviction of Geetha, her husband and two others on Tuesday for allegedly deceiving a bank to obtain a loan of Rs 25 crore in 2009, which later soared to more than Rs 42 crore.

The CBI had previously filed a complaint against Geetha and her husband Ramakoteswara, managing director of Visweswara Infrastructure, and others in the case. The court sentenced them to five years in prison in addition to imposing a fine.

“Geetha was brought here last night. However, according to the prison handbook, she must be tested for COVID-19. So CBI officials brought her back and brought her back this afternoon,” said said sources from the special women’s prisons.

Geetha, who won the Araku Lok Sabha seat representing the YSR Congress in the 2014 general election, left the party in 2018. She later joined the BJP in 2019. A year earlier, she launched the Jana Jagruthi party .

Geetha, who was elected on a YSRCP ticket for the Lok Sabha in 2014, was vying for a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) ticket ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. However, after it became clear that the TDP would not align her, she launched the Jana Jagruthi Party on the slogan of social justice. At the launch, Geetha said education, women’s empowerment, health facilities and social justice are some of the areas her party will focus on.

Geetha hails from Addateegala of East Godavari district and belongs to the Valmiki tribe. She is said to be the first woman to graduate from the tribal belt and holds a master’s degree in public administration and sociology from Andhra University. She is a former assistant receiver, who resigned from all services in 2010.
